Mom's tip of the day - Homeschool Edition

Through homeschooling, you have the tremendous opportunity to shape your child’s worldview in every field of study. Check out some of my favorite curriculum for providing a biblical worldview HERE.

Mom's tip of the day - Homeschool Edition

My family can get over just about any of my failures or organizational lackings if they just have clean socks and underwear available. This is laundry priority at our house!

MTOD: Homeschool Edition #26

Mom's tip of the day - Homeschool Edition

The $25,000 IDEA
Years ago, an efficiency consultant named Ivy Lee met with the president of a small steel plant. The president was stressed because he believed his employees really didn't know how to manage their time and tend to priorities. Ivy Lee made a simple suggestion:

At the end of each day, take out a sheet of paper. Write down the six most important things you have to do the next day. Then rank those items in the order of importance. When you begin work the next morning, take out the paper and start with item number one. When you have finished that item, move on to number two (and so on down the list). If you cannot complete an item because of external factors, skip it and move on to the next one. At the end of the day make another list of the six most important items you have to do the next day....
The President sent him a check for $25,000 because his suggestion (which took only about 15 minutes of his time) made such a huge difference for the company.

How could you apply the $25,000 idea to your life and homeschool?

MTOD: Homeschool Edition #25

Mom's tip of the day - Homeschool Edition

You may not be hustling out the door every day, but you still need a nightly routine that prepares for you for a hassle-free morning. The old saying is true: If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Ask yourself:

  • Does your hubs have what he needs for the next day?
  • Do you know what’s for breakfast?
  • Do you and your kids have your clothes laid out?
  • Do you have the alarm set to wake before your kids?
  • And don’t forget to GO TO BED!

Mom's tip of the day - Homeschool Edition

When it comes to curriculum choices, you have got to become a researcher. Go online. Look at samples. Ask your friends. And when you’re "trying something on" to see if it fits you and your family, give it a real, honest try before throwing in the towel. You might have to grow into it!

Mom's tip of the day - Homeschool Edition

Growing up with a mom who taught public school, I know how she valued her "personal days." One day each semester, she had a day off. She could use it for going to the dentist, cleaning her house, whatever she wanted to do with it. It’s a great idea for homeschooling moms, too!

Mom's tip of the day - Homeschool Edition

Running your home (housekeeping and maintenance) should be a part of your homeschool routine. Teaching your children the life skills of managing a home will set them apart from everyone else when it comes to future employers—not to mention how much it will help YOU.

MTOD: Homeschool Edition #21

Mom's tip of the day - Homeschool Edition

Mom, when it comes to homeschooling, it is critical that you and your husband are on the same page. Over the years, I have counseled several moms who wanted to homeschool, but their husbands did not want them to. When they do it anyway, it never works out.

If you and your spouse are not in agreement about homeschooling, it is not the right choice for you. That said, the very best resource that you can "give" a husband who is hesitant to homeschool is another family who is successfully homeschooling. If he sees it working, and he sees a dad who is happily on board, that will speak more loudly to him than anything you could ever say or any book he could ever read.

Mom's tip of the day - Homeschool Edition

Got boys? Keep them active. After periods of sitting, let them go outside and let off some steam. Follow sedentary tasks with a hands-on activity (include not only crafts but also household chores). Boys weren't wired for long periods of physical inactivity. They will be able to focus and respond better to learning when you allow for this.

When you've finally found a book your child enjoyed, you want to find more, right? Here's how: Go to Amazon and search for the title of the book your child liked. Then scroll down to where it says, Customers who bought this book also bought... and look at those titles. It’s an instant recommended list!

Mom's tip of the day - Homeschool Edition

The Who and the Why of Christian Homeschooling:
  • Who are you? You are a child of God. You’re homeschooling because you believe He has called you to do this for Him.
  • What are you doing? You are educating your children at home because you believe that for your kids and for your family, this is the right choice.

Mom's tip of the day - Homeschool Edition

Begin reading aloud to your child as soon as he is born (and even before!). Children develop much of their intelligence and capacity for learning in the early years, so the sooner you start reading aloud, the better!

Mom's tip of the day - Homeschool Edition

Struggling with the characteristic of teachability? Explain to your child that there will be many times when he will not get the answer/concept immediately. If he knew everything, then there wouldn’t be anything to learn! Getting something wrong means that he has something new to learn, and that’s what education is all about.

Mom's tip of the day - Homeschool Edition

Getting beat up over the socialization question? If you’ll notice, there are plenty of adults who were traditionally schooled, yet still cut in line, don’t know how to take turns, and never learned how to get along with other people.

Mom's tip of the day - Homeschool Edition

Make sure that you, as the mom/teacher, are living your own life grounded in the Word of God and setting an example of a life surrendered to Christ. Your kids will respond first and foremost to the life they see you live, and you will naturally incorporate that into your teaching.

Mom's tip of the day - Homeschool Edition

Carving out a space of your own is an absolute necessity for a homeschooling mom. You need a desk or a cabinet or even just a basket beside your favorite chair that is specifically yours--for your stuff. Label everything so that when you inevitably let your students borrow your pens, scissors, or calculator, you can be sure they don't keep them. (Can you tell I'm speaking from experience?)

Mom's tip of the day - Homeschool Edition

Don’t think of your baby or toddler as intrusive when it comes to your school schedule. Your attitude will be absorbed by your student. When it comes to younger sibs, opportunities abound for learning patience and putting others first.

For younger ages, field trips, playing outside, making crafts, and playing with others in group settings are all part of learning and can be counted as time spent doing so.

Whatever way that works best for you is the way you should operate and organize your homeschool. It doesn’t matter what works for other people. What matters is what works for you and your kids.

Mom's tip of the day - Homeschool Edition

When you are spending a lot of time homeschooling an older child/children, don’t forget to share one-on-one time with your younger child. Find something that you can do with just her later in the day--like play a game, take a walk, or read aloud—when she can have your undivided attention.
