Scaling a Wall Called Cancer

New to Mom Seriously? Welcome! You'll find tons of great parenting articles, homeschooling encouragement, and every day, a Mom's Tip of the Day. Enjoy!

When I first met her, I didn't like her.

She had long straight hair--swingy hair--the kind that curly-haired gals like me only dream of. (And she was constantly swinging it, LOL!) And her figure? Well, she was like a Barbie doll come to life. She was athletic and sporty, and she was a risk-taker. She actually scaled the brick wall around the courtyard of our dorm at Middle Tennessee State University once, jumping from the top of it to then climb in the open window of the lobby on the second floor. (Why even attempt this? Because, she said, she had been thinking about it...she came up with a plan, and once she knew she could do it, she just did it.) Despite the coveted hair, the enviable figure, and the lapses of sanity, we became best friends, then roommates, and a couple of years after she introduced me to her older brother, we became sisters-in-law!

Karla with children: (L to R) Baylee, Summer, Luke
Karla and I have been friends for over 25 years. We've been sisters for 23 of those. We have argued, laughed, and prayed together through a lot of living--marriage, babies, raising our families--all the stuff that goes with being a woman and a mom (and Karla is a stepmom, as well, to her husband Doug's older kids, Christi and Jon). Recently, we've started another journey together. A journey no one wants to travel. A journey we never expected to travel.

About three weeks ago, Karla found a lump.

Several doctors' visits later, her diagnosis is breast cancer, stage 3. So, in just a few weeks' time, life has changed. It's changed a lot.

As she approaches chemo and after that, surgery, there are a lot of things that will be changing. The beautiful hair (which has gotten curlier over the years, actually) will likely fall out. The figure will be altered too. As for lapses of sanity, upon experiencing "Karla on Valium" after her biopsy last week, perhaps the best is yet to come, LOL!

But that risk-taker?
That sporty competitor who was the first girl in her town to play Little League baseball...
A tennis pro...
A never-say-die card player...
A wall-scaler...
That doesn't change.

Karla, this is how I see it: This time, the wall you're scaling is called cancer. You've been thinking this through for a few weeks now, mulling it over, thinking about how success will be accomplished. Now the plan is in place for this wall. Every time you think about it, you go back over the basics, step by step, in your mind: The wall is high, but not that high. And the window on the second floor, well, it stays open all the time. It might be tricky, that leap from wall to window sill, but all you have to do is grab it and hang on. Your friends will be there to pull you in the rest of the way.

You can do it...and while I might have let you scale the dorm wall on your own, we'll do this wall together.

“But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in Him.
He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for You are the one I praise. (Jeremiah 17:7-8, 14)

Sweet Victory: A Winning Season

New to Mom Seriously? Welcome! You'll find tons of great parenting articles, homeschooling encouragement, and every day, a Mom's Tip of the Day. Enjoy!

Three Generations of Baseball: Poppy, David, Rich, and Derek

We won the tournament! What  great game! I just wanted to share some of these pics with you because they are just so precious! Above, the boys and Rich, with Rich's dad Ray (otherwise known as "Poppy") on the left. Poppy has coached almost all of Derek's baseball teams, and Rich has coached both the boys (and Danya, too!). David got his first All Tournament award, and my friend Sandy's son, Andy, was the MVP.

Andy and David

It was so terrific to see our guys excel this season and win this tournament! I am so thankful for our homeschool umbrella, Aaron Academy, and its commitment to providing homeschoolers with quality sports programs.

I'm letting Derek have the final word on this post. And in this case, a picture is worth a thousand words!

Why Memorize Scripture? Three Reasons that Will Motivate You!

New to Mom Seriously? WELCOME! Be sure to sign up for my daily email newsletter, full of practical tips for purposeful parenting!

“Our families are in a battle. We will be tempted. And we need an arsenal of truth in our hearts and minds so we are equipped to stand firm.” ~Caroline Boykin, author, The Well-Versed Family

Scripture memory is becoming obsolete in many of our churches today, yet, like prayer and Bible study, it is a critical Christian discipline. Do you know how easy it is to hide the Word in your children’s hearts? And do you know how the hidden Word will make a difference when your kids are making everyday decisions, as well as once-in-a-lifetime ones?

Caroline Boykin is the author of The Well-Versed Family. She shares three key reasons why we should be memorizing Scripture as well as teaching our children to.

Because God tells us to. "He’s really clear about that," says Caroline. "He tells us in Deuteronomy 6 to impress these words upon our own hearts, and then impress them on our children. Any tme that God tells us to do something, we know there is an express reason for it."

Because the value is immeasureable. "We’re trying to desperately as moms these days to create the best environment and provide everything for our kids to nourish them so they will flourish and grow, educationally and every other way, too," Caroline notes. "All of the things we are trying to provide for our kids—comfort, guidance, hope, joy, peace, prosperity, health, and wisdom—are linked to the knowledge of God’s Word."

Would you send your child out to play football without the proper equipment? Would you allow a road trip to be taken without your child wearing a seatbelt? Then why expect to send your child safely out into today’s culture without being properly equipped and protected by the Word of God?

Because of the world that we live in.“Our kids need to have God’s Word at their disposal simply because of the world we live in,” Caroline agrees. “The stakes are so high. The spiritual challenges and dangers of living in this culture are beyond what we could have ever imagined. Satan is trying to destroy our kids from the inside out, and unless they have the weaponry to combat that, they really are sitting ducks.” (Connect with Caroline online at The Well Versed Family.)

Mom's tip of the day

During the ‘tween years, when the lines are drawn between who’s in and who’s out, it is more important than ever that our children know they are not only loved, but liked.

Three Ways to Let Your Child Know She is Likeable

New to Mom Seriously? Welcome! You'll find tons of great parenting articles, homeschooling encouragement, and every day, a Mom's Tip of the Day. Enjoy!

Most kids understand that love is part of a parent’s job description. Parents have to love their kids, LOL. But do they have to like them? Liking is optional. Liking has to do with preference, personality, and at times, partiality. During the ‘tween years, when the lines are drawn between who is in and who is out, it is more important than ever that our children know they are not only loved, but they are liked: They are accepted, appreciated, and even admired. Here are three ways parents can let children know that they have a high likeability factor.

Tell them. Never underestimate the power of your words. Tell your child often of his likeability. I like being with you. You are a neat kid. You are a lot of fun. And how about telling other people? Resist the urge to join in the chorus of, “My kids are driving me crazy.” Instead, mention what a great time you have with your kids. Children are validated by what they hear you say.

Have fun. Play games. Go ouside. Enjoy their friends! What do they like to do? You can do it with them. My sons have recently become fascinated with the old shoot-‘em-up Westerns. I like spending time with my boys, so that means I have recently become "fascinated" with Westerns, too. Well, not really, but I am fascinated with my boys, and as they grow, I am interested in what makes them tick. I would rather join in their fun than be left out of it.

Appreciate differences. As children grow and begin to develop their own personalities, parents may find that a child has some tendencies or traits that rub them the wrong way. For example, a free-spirited, athletic parent may grow exasperated with a quiet child who spends hours reading. How about listing all the wonderful things about your child that you admire? Appreciate your child by grasping the divine nature of her differences. God has a special plan and purpose for your child, and He designed her personality with His ultimate goal in mind.

Every parent hopes to raise likeable children. Likeability is what engages people in relationships, and God-honoring relationships draw people to Christ. If you are dealing with an anxious ‘tween or an aggravating toddler, the likeability meter may be low. That is where love comes in. Love tides you over when like is dwindling! There will always be times when the likeability factor just does not add up. When that happens, love your child enough to pursue her likeability

Weekly Wrap Up: Where I Have Been

New to Mom Seriously? Welcome! You'll find tons of great parenting articles, homeschooling encouragement, and every day, a Mom's Tip of the Day. Enjoy!

Hello Everybody,

How busy does the end of the school year get at your house? We have been swamped. As the boys have been finishing up their assignments, I've taken on several new writing projects along with other editorial work that greets me at my desk each day. Add to that a daughter in the music biz and baseball season heading into tournament time, and we have a pretty full schedule! Not a lot of time left to blog! :)

(L to R) David, Rich, Derek

My guys have had a great season. I've loved having them on the same team! Rich has enjoyed helping coach this high school team as his schedule has allowed him to. I'm hoping to get my game on and be back to more regular blogging after the tournament this weekend!

Happy Mother's Day!

New to Mom Seriously? WELCOME! Be sure to sign up for my daily email newsletter, full of practical tips for purposeful parenting!

I just wanted to wish everyone a Happy Mother's Day today, and I want to thank you so much for reading Mom Seriously. I appreciate your passion for parenting, and I'm blessed to be able offer to you the parenting tips and information that I've learned (and continue to learn!) along my journey.

It is hard to believe that this is my 20th Mother's Day. I remember my the first one, spent in Charlotte, NC, at Carmel Baptist Church. Danya was four months old, and on that Mother's Day, she was dedicated (as Rich and I dedicated ourselves to raising her) along with about six other babies in a Parent/Baby dedication service. The time has flown by since that first Mom's Day. I'm amazed and so overwhelmingly thankful to be spending this day with my husband and our three children, my mom and dad, my mother-in-law and father-in-law, and my grandmother-in-law, who is 91 years old, and I have no idea how many Mom's Days this makes for her!

But I realize that Mother's Day isn't all that great for a lot of people today. There are those who have lost their moms since last year's Mother's Day. There are moms whose children are estranged or prodigals. There are women who are struggling with infertility, who, rather than sit through another Mother's Day sermon, will opt out of Sunday worship all together on this day. There are moms spending their Mother's Day in waiting rooms at places like Vanderbilt Hospital and St. Jude's, wondering what the future holds for their children.

It's good to know that on Mother's Day and every day, there is One who will never leave us or forsake us, One who is building (and redeeming and re-building) the masterplan of our lives as surely as the Old Testament figure Nehemiah rebuilt the wall of Jerusalem. In spite of constant attack by their enemies, Nehemiah urged the people to be fearless and stand guard by their families. He said, "Don't be afraid of the enemy! Remember the Lord, who is great and glorious, and fight for your friends, your families, and your homes!" (Nehemiah 5:14 NLT)

Today, as then, these are the key elements of our lives that are surely worth fighting for. And Mother's Day reminds us just why it is that we do what we do.

Happy Mother's Day--may you and your family be blessed today!

Top Ten Reasons Why I Am Not An Umpire

New to Mom Seriously? WELCOME! Be sure to sign up for my daily email newsletter, full of practical tips for purposeful parenting!

Getty Images
As my boys' baseball season is winding down and heading into tournament play, I would like to recognize our umps with this post.

Gentlemen, I know you've heard me talking from my regular seat right behind home plate. I know you're glad there is a chain link fence between us. And I know you think that I think I could do your job. But I don't, and to prove it, here are my top ten reasons explaining why I am not an umpire.

10. When a runner doesn't touch home plate, I would call him out.
  9. When it is 30 degrees outside, and sleeting, I would cancel the game.
  8.  I always show up on time.
  7.  A pouch of baseballs at my waist is not a good look for me.
  6.  I can count higher than three.
  5.  I think my sons are always safe.
  4.  There would be one strike zone, and it would be the same for both teams.
  3.  When I say "strike" it sounds like the word, "strike."
  2.  I'm better at guilt trips than power trips.
  1.  I'm consistent. (See #5.)

[Please note: This post is for entertainment purposes only. Some of my best friends are umpires. :)]
